Plurals

This week we have explored what a plural is. We have also been looking at the rules for writing plurals. Some of us have been using an apostrophe with an s to make a plural. We have learnt that an apostrophe does not make a plural.

Time for another Pep Talk

Do you feel in need of a Pep Talk? Sometimes it is good to stop and think about life and how we are doing.

It is good to ask ourselves- Are we focused learners? Are we being the best that we can be?

Our aim at Mangapapa is to be awesome!  We think this Pep Talk by Kid President is very motivating.

Make a Quality Comment

Room Two know that it is important to make quality comments on a blog. This video clip outlines the important things we need to remember when making a quality blog.

Matariki stories

Matariki

This week is Matariki. The official date this year is June 10th.

What is Matariki?

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises just once a year, in mid-winter – late May or early June. For many Māori, it heralds the start of a new year.
Matariki literally means the ‘eyes of god’ (mata ariki) or ‘little eyes’ (mata riki). According to myth, when Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, were separated by their children, the god of the winds, Tāwhirimātea, became so angry that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens.

Cycles of life and death

Traditionally, Matariki was a time to remember those who had died in the last year. But it was also a happy event – crops had been harvested and seafood and birds had been collected. With plenty of food in the storehouses, Matariki was a time for singing, dancing and feasting.

Modern Matariki

Matariki, or Māori New Year celebrations were once popular, but stopped in the 1940s. In 2000, they were revived. Only a few people took part at first, but in just a few years thousands were honouring the ‘New Zealand Thanksgiving’. A special feature of Matariki celebrations is the flying of kites – according to ancient custom they flutter close to the stars.

Report Writing

This term we have had a focus on report writing. Our class wrote reports on famous landmarks from around the world. Before we could write our reports we had to research the landmark we were focusing on. We then had to sift through and summarise the main ideas that we wanted to use in how report. We explored how to write reports and then we were ready to write our reports. Happy reading!

The Big Crunch!

On Friday all the school assembled on the big side with a Jazz apple.  At exactly 2.13pm we all took part in the 'Big Crunch'. The aim was to take part nationally in an attempt to break the world record for the most apple eaten by people simultaneously. We all went quiet before we took a bite and when we did you could hear the sound of over 490 children and teachers biting into a juicy, red, apple.

Triathlon Poem

I dashed off at the start like a dart, separating apart.
With flames behind me I had enough time to drink a cup of tea.
I came to my transition in first position.
I was on my bike, in the lead, with a great amount of terrific speed.
As I made my break I began to escape.
When I hit the water my flame began to slaughter.
I hear cheering as I saw the finish line appearing.
The parents go wild as they cheer for their child.

Be something awesome!

What are your goals in life. We took a look at this inspirational video clip. We want to create something that is awesome!

Welcome to 2013

Yeah! Our 2013 blog is up and running. Our aim is to be positive role models to the younger students at our school. Part of being a role model means showing respect to others. It is important that we know how to speak nicely to others. A kind word goes a long way! Check out this video clip about compliments.
