Vocabulary- Working out the meaning
We are learning different ways to work out the meaning of words that we don’t know the meaning to.
We are learning to use context clues to work out the meaning of words.
This means we will:
*Focus on the parts of speech ( word class/language feature) the word would be.
*Focus on finding words that would make sense and are grammatically correct.
Today we are using the theme of Halloween to unpack this learning intention.
What are word classes?
Our first task is to brainstorm what adjectives, verbs, nouns and adverbs we associate with Halloween.
What words can you think of?
Maybe this video clip will help your thinking. Remember good readers are always trying to make connections with what they know.

Animal Classifications
Over the past two weeks we have been exploring texts about dinosaurs. We know that good readers ask questions when they are unsure about the meaning of what they are reading. We have come across words such as reptiles, mammals and amphibians. We all knew they are types of animals but for many of us we still had questions about what makes these animals different from one another.
Here are some video clip we watched to help us try and clarify our understanding.

Room Two Disco's the Night Away
Last night we had a disco at the hall to raise money for our Year Six Camp. Most of Room Two came along and had an awesome evening. Quite a few of us had dance offs with one another. We think Mrs Donnelly held her own in the face of pretty impressive competition. Maybe we could challenge the other Year Six classes to a dance off??

Punctuation can make a big difference
When we read something we need to be mindful of punctuation. Punctuation is a very powerful tool. It is used to help create meaning.
Have a look at this clip.It will make you realise we need to stop and think about punctuation when we read and write.
Using context for meaning
This week in reading we are learning how we can used context clues to work out the meaning of words.
Yesterday we learnt that we can look for clues amongst words, phrases, sentences and paragraphs to help us with our understanding.( Syntactic clues)
Syntax is how words are sequenced to convey meaning.
Can you spot the difference in meaning between these two sentences.
The boy sat in the chair with the broken arm.
The boy witht the broken arm sat in the chair.
Look how re-arranging these words creates different meaning.

Chatter Rings
Chatter Rings have become all the rage at Mangapapa School. We did a little investigating and found out that they are also known as Jitter Rings.
We found out that NZ has an official Jitter Ring site which says that
their Jitter Ring is an original design chatter ring, first introduced in New Zealand in 1996 as the Wonder Ring. It has also sold in Australia, Germany, UK, Israel, USA, Hawaii, Singapore and Japan.
The Art of the Jitter Ring is all about making moves. In the hands of a novice, even the World Famous Jitter Ring is just plain heavy metal. But in the hands of a pro…it will cry and sing!
Check out this What Now video clip.

Prior Knowledge
Jake and Maddi have made a Prezi presentation explaining what Prior Knowledge is. In reading we have been learning the importance of making connections with our prior knowledge before, during and after reading.
We didn't think the Olympics could get any more inspiring...
There's something about the innocence of a child that can make simple actions into moments that bring tears to our eyes.
And such a moment has come to us, thanks to the Canadian 4x100m relay team's Justyn Warner.
The Canadian sprinters were denied a bronze medal at the London Olympics after being disqualified.
That annoyed a few people, including 10-year-old Elijah Porter from Newfoundland.
So he wrote the team - Warner, Gavin Smellie, Oluseyi Smith and Jared Connaughton - a letter to cheer them up and included his own medal for them:
Here's what it says:
"I'm Elijah Porter. I'm ten and I live in Newfoundland, Canada. When I heard what happened on Aug. 11, I knew it was wrong. The rules were not right. But, at last, I realized how good you were. We're Canadians. We persevere. We create better lives for each other. The cold didn’t stop us from living in the North. We didn’t lose the War of 1812. We adapt and survive. We earned our freedom. Someday if I become a biologist, or if I get rich, and, if I remember, I will donate money to the summer and winter Olympians. I hope you like the medal!"
Elijah has since appeared on radio in Canada for his gesture drawing this wonderful response from Warner, who couldn't dial in to the show:
"Elijah, your letter & medal was inspiring to say the least. After learning about our DQ we as a team were devastated & heartbroken, but your words & support gave reminder to us in regards to why we work so hard to represent our country. Its not just about getting the recognition and the praise for all the hard work that is put in, but more about inspiring individuals & our nation. Dream Big always & never discredit yourself in anything that you do. You get an honorary spot on our 4x100 team!!"
And we thought the Olympics couldn't make us feel any better about ourselves
Storybird
This week our class learnt how to use storybird. We had a lot of fun selecting different pictures to help us create our stories. Lauren and Jake have published their stories. You might like to join storybird and start creating your own online books.

Paper Folding
On Wednesday for reading we were asked to read a School Journal that had instructions for making a paper flower. It challenged us to be able to work out instructions. It also made us realise that we use reading for all sorts of purposes.
Cairo, Lezra, Marshall and Locklyn were quick to read and understand the instructions. They helped many of the class to understand what to do.By the end of the session most of us were very good at paper folding.

Sarah Ulmer
This week we read about Sarah Ulmer. Prior to reading this text we explored what prior knowledge we had about Sarah Ulmer and cycling. We discovered that we didn't know that much about the topic. Finn did know that cyclists race at a valendrome.
What do you know about Sarah Ulmer?
Sarah Ulmer became the first New Zealander to win an Olympic cycling gold when she was victorious in the women’s individual pursuit in Athens in 2004. She recorded a world record time in the final. When she left Athens at the end of the games, Ulmer held the Olympic title, the Olympic , Commonwealth and World records, and the Commonwealth Games title for the 3000m pursuit.
Ulmer’s strength in the individual pursuit was that she held her speed so well, whereas others tended to blast out of the blocks and then wobble home. In the Olympic final, against Katie Mactier, Ulmer trailed by a second after 1000m. After that she was remorselessly efficient. When she was done, she had recorded 3min 24.537s and had won by a staggering 3.113s, this in a sport that is measured in thousandths of a second.
Her games team-mates tended to seek her out before their events, cherishing her positive attitude, experience and encouraging manner. She was captain of the 2002 Commonwealth Games team and given the honour of carrying the flag at the Athens Olympics closing ceremony.

Origins of the Ancient Olympics
For reading we have been learning to Connect with Prior Knowledge. We know that good readers use what they know to help them make connections with a text which helps them understand what they are reading.
This week for shared reading we have been reading a factual text about the origins of the Olympic Games.
We discovered very quickly that we didn't have a lot of Prior Knowledge about how the Olympic Games began.
We do now!
The Olympic Games began in ancient Greece. The first Games were in the year 776 BC.
The first Olympic Games were part of a religious festival to honour the god Zeus.
